How To Grow Transplants In Your Own House

,
Today we are going to discuss about how you can grow Transplants (seedlings) in your house and use it to grow plants in stead of growing directly from the seeds. Now, you must be wondering why we should take the pain of preparing transplants when we can easily grow plants directly from seeds. So let me tell you this, there are two major advantages of growing transplants in stead of growing plants directly from the seeds.

Firstly, it drastically reduces poor germination possibilities. Unlike directly growing from the seeds in this case proper care is taken to every seeds so that each of them gets most favourable condition for germination. So the seed wastage is greatly reduced.

Secondly, when you transplant the seedlings to the permanent spot where they are meant to grow Chances of survival of the plants are increased greatly as they become adaptive to the climate outside. It most of the cases when we grow from the seeds this is the time when most of the plants die as they try their best to adapt to the surroundings.

So where do we start?

To prepare the transplant you first need to have high quality seeds. You can buy from your nearby nursery shop or you can use your own. The seeds from commercial supplier are generally are of superior quality as it is prepared under professional guidance. If you are planning to buy the seeds please refer to the dates mentioned in the packet while buying.

The next thing which is very very important in transplanting is the media or the soil. Different mediaare used, to prepare the transplant. But while choosing, remember it should allow air and water to reach the seed, and it should provide nutrition in those early times.

The next question is should you use sterile or normal media. Well, in most of the cases the media used by professional gardeners are sterile in nature. It reduces the chance of fungal or any other diseases. You can easily find sterile media from your nearest garden shop. One of the major drawback about using sterile media is that it contains almost no nutrient. So you need to transfer the seedlings in early stages or they would die.

Once you have finalized about the seeds and growth media it is now time to select the containers. The most popular is plastic seedling trays. This form is widely used by the gardeners and nurseries across the world. It can save you lots of time and space by selecting these them than going for individual pots. You can also choose to use used egg cartons or paper cups. Sometimes tiny pots made up from peat moss or coconut coir is also used. Now that you have selected your final ingredient, put some mixture (growth media) in every pot or compartment of the tray, sow the seed and cover it with some mixture. Add little bit of water to keep the mixture moistened. Keep the tray in a place inside your house and wait for the seeds to germinate.

Once they germinate, put the tray in a place where the tray get sunlight. It will ensure proper growth for the seedlings. After two to 4 weeks (depending on the plant and the size of the seedlings) transplant them in their permanent spot.

Grow Your Own Wedding Flowers Georgie Newberys latest flower farming book is here!!

,
Being sent a copy of Georgie Newberys new book, which, by the way will be published in early November, was a complete treat and made my day on Saturday when it arrived. It is a thing of beauty. A coffee table tome. The kind of book you would be proud to display when you wanted to show off a bit perhaps. Its cover is a beautiful bouquet that could only have come from Common Farm Flowers, full of exquisitely conditioned roses and sweet peas, fennel and poppy seed heads. It is a quintessentially English bouquet that any bride would be thrilled to have as part of her special day.

Now to actually review a book by a friend is hard, and so, frankly, Im not even going to pretend that is what this is. However, I do have one issue and that is the name of the book, Grow Your Own Wedding Flowers, ought to be Find A Wedding To Grow Flowers For, because this book is not just how to grow flowers for your wedding. It goes far beyond that. From cutting and conditioning, to quantities of stems needed and advice on how best to manage the floristry as well as tips on scheduling and how to manage the flowers and floristry at the same time as everything else, what this book gives the reader is an insight into how Common Farm Flowers grow, manage and cut for weddings every season of every year. But you could change the word wedding and add any event that flowers might be appropriate at and this book is for you. In fact you could decide you wanted to grow a great bouquet for yourself, a friend or relative and this book is for you. And even if you decide not to grow your own flowers, this book is full of inspiration to help you decide what you want from your event flowers.

What I found really wonderful are the four chapters that help the reader to decide what it is they are going to grow for the appropriate season that their special day falls in. It doesnt just concentrate on what you can grow, although it covers that comprehensively with sections on annuals, perennials, bulbs and shrubs, but it also looks at how wild flowers, the plants already growing in the garden, including plants for foliage, can be added into the palette of plants being produced, as well as separate sections on how to cut and condition these. Alongside these are sections about the symbolism and meaning of individual flowers; daisies for loyal love, sunflowers for loyalty and longevity and on each page are the most startlingly beautiful photographs of weddings that Common Farm Flowers have created both flowers and floristry for.

What is particularly special about this book though, more than the words and the photos, is the insight into the work that Georgie and her amazing team put into not only each and every wedding they create such wonderful floristry for, but in fact the work and effort behind running such a hugely successful business as Common Farm Flowers is. She speaks lovingly of slow flowers, allying the way she and Fabrizio work the land with the Slow Food movement, one at which love and care for the land and the other species that inhabit it is constantly at the centre of everything they do. She speaks of organic practises, compost teas and the gentle ways in which they steward the land from which these magnificent flowers are cut and with this knowledge it is no wonder that the quality of both the flowers and the floristry sing through.

At Common Farm Flowers a successful business has been made growing flowers for cutting and creating floristry with those flowers in a way that is kind to the earth, wildlife and people. This book proves that you can have an ecologically sound and principled business, producing a really extraordinary product that is also sustainable and principled. Take this book and apply the principles to your garden and you wont go far wrong, in both growing and ecological practises. And you will have some magnificent flowers that you could, if you wanted to, use for a wedding.

I forgot to mention that Sarah Raven wrote the foreword. I also forgot to mention that if you can get through the acknowledgements without a tear, then you are a less sentimental soul than I!

As a little addendum I have to mention the Common Farm Meadows. Teaming with butterflies, pollinators and full of orchids and native wild flowers, they are a complete marvel and speak of Fabrizios understanding and love of the land for which he cares. Whilst Georgie is the force behind the floristry and the commercial business, Fabrizio manages the land, always with an eye on the natural turning of the seasons and the vast amount of other species who inhabit the land alongside the family and the team. Once upon a time I commented that these meadows are on a par with those at Great Dixter, and those who know me also know I would never say such a thing unless I truly meant it. This summer they were stunning and could only have been brought into being by a man who knows the land. I doff my cap to Fabrizio, steward of the extraordinary land at Common Farm.

Growing Spinach of Your Own A Basic Idea

,

Spinach is one of the vegetable from our list of easiest to grow vegetables. It is very easy to grow and maintain.

Though spinach is famous for iron, there are several other elements which are far more in spinach than the iron. Vitamin A and K are more abundant in spinach. If you want to take the best of iron from spinach add some slices of oranges to increase the absorption.

Spinach is a winter crop. Some variety can even survive frosts also. It can mature within a month or so. Though it requires full sun but much heat can result in early bolting of the spinach.

The ideal pH for spinach is 6.5 to 7. Add lime to reduce the acidic nature of the soil in case pH is less than this level. Mix compost along with water prior to planting the seeds. Put the seeds ½ inch deep and at 2 inches space. It is wise to plant spinach with a little space in between. This can prevent many problems due to moisture in the air. If you are using container planting you can put 3 seeds per pot with a minimum gap of 1 inch.

DO NOT grow spinach in the same soil where beets or chard has grown earlier. These have similar requirements from the soil and also they are nest to the same kind of parasites as of spinach.
When the plant reach a size 1/3 of its full height,You can add nitrogen-rich fertilizers to the soil. You can also avoid fertilizers if you had added enough compost at the start.
Water the plant regularly. Mulching is a good idea to restore soil moisture. When seedlings sprout to about two inches, thin them to 3-4 inches apart.

After about six weeks of planting pinch off leaves for your kitchen purpose but keep the central structure intact. These will produce seeds in the later stages. In case you do not require seeds you can pull out the whole plant.

Cliff off any leaf which turned yellow. This will increase the flow of sap to the main plant and the other healthy leaves.

Don’t wait too long for harvesting. After maturity the leaves will turn bitter. You can either take out the leaves from the plant or you can cut the whole plant near the roots and enjoy your spinach with your family.

By growing spinach in your own house you can be rest assure about the quality of the fertilizers. To get greater yield chemical fertilizers and pesticides are applied continuously these days. It is always better to avoid those spinach.

The famous cartoon character Popeye have made spinach very popular among the children. Though you will not get the instant gratification of building up large muscles, its benefits are definitely worth mentioning. There are so many benefits of eating spinach. You can eat them both cooked or raw. It helps preventing osteoporosis, fighting against cancer and heart diseases. And last but not least it will definitely add flavor to the taste buds.
